Students under 17 who are interested in obtaining a drivers license are required by state law to take the 38 hour drivers education. Louisiana has a graduated drivers licensing program. After taking the 30 hours of classroom and the 8 hours of behind the wheel instruction, they will receive a certificate of completion. This will be taken to the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. They will take a vision test and the knowledge test which consists of 40 questions. If they pass, they will receive their learner's permit. They must keep the Learner's Permit for a minimum of 180 days and turn 16 years old. At that time, they will go back to OMV and take the driving skills test only. If they pass, they receive an intermediate license, which is the same as a full license but with several restrictions. The new restrictions will take effect January 2011. When the student turns 17 years old and has successfully completed the intermediate stage, the restrictions are lifted (full license).
